You get used to it - I went to college in DC. Though I have to admit, when I went to ALA there a couple of years ago, it was pretty bad.
Go visit my favorite unknown monument - Einstein! There's a statue of him behind the National Academy of Sciences that's big enough you can sit on his lap for a picture. And the dais has a star map. Hard to see from the street, so almost no one knows about it.
