The video of Sam the koala drinking water breaks my heart. Sad, hurt koala! The Australian dollar exchange rate is really favorable to our dollar right now, so donating some money to the Aus. Red Cross and the Victoria wildlife rescue is both easy and cheap enough to assuage some social sadness.

So this week I decided to stop going to kung fu. It's been an awesome three years, and I can't believe I actually progressed as far as I have. But when we move in a few months I'd have to give it up anyway, and for the next few months it'll be cheaper and more convenient for me to hit the gym after work, rather than be beholden to a class schedule a couple nights a week. So I've joined up with Boston Sports Club, and am slowly getting back into the gym groove. I'm still a little intimidated by the weight equipment because it's a total dude zone, but I'm hoping it'll be a bit less crowded on the weekend so I can figure out how the weight machines work without looking stupid in front of too many people. You know I'll totally be getting into the ab machine thingy all backwards and upside down.

Augh. On my way to kung-fu (where I learned some bad ass sword skills), some doddering old guy who I suspect may not be licensed stopped driving, in the middle of the street, and proceeded to back straight into my car (which was also stopped, and my horn was blaring in full "what are you doing you moron" style). OMG. Who does that?

Meme from [livejournal.com profile] ms_ntropy

As was demonstrated in an interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade.

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun.

Kelo vs..... a town in Connecticut? We in the biz just call it Kelo

Augh. Oh my god. Sarah Palin is frightfully unqualified. I also love how she says she reads "all of them" when asked which specific newspapers she reads to keep up with current events. She couldn't even pull the name of an Alaskan newspaper out of her ass? Does she even want this job? It's not like she's trying at all.

On a more pleasant note- my second advanced class of kung fu tonight went well!

Also, Drew downloaded Mega Man 9 for the xbox, and it is delightful. Side scrolling video games!!!! It looks just like classic Mega Man 2, one of the best video games of all time. If they made more side scrollers these days I'd play a lot more video games.

Guess who's moving up to the advanced class in kung fu? This girl! I'm kind of intimidated, the advanced class is very.... advanced, and I am not nearly as good as they are. But I'm excited, too, because I have definitely been getting a little bored with my class, and could stand to learn new things and be challenged. So next Monday I move up!

I am addicted to following the news of our economic crisis. I've been reading/listening to NPR's new Planet Money program, which is fascinating, and reading everything else I can find time for. Robert Reich has an interesting blog post about the bail-out bill in Congress.
wildflowersoul: (SPN- I rock)
First- I ate fish this weekend! Raw fish! It was... not bad and not good. It was 100% neutral. But I'm willing to try it again.

Second- this show on CartoonNetwork called Chowder is the weirdest, most entertaining thing ever.

Third- thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cayetana for recommending this week's This American Life. Jerry Springer's life story turns out to be absolutely fascinating. Harvard Law? Really? I would totally vote for Jerry Springer if given the chance.

Off to kung-fu! We've been plunging ahead really fast with some forms, it's been awesome lately.
wildflowersoul: (SPN- winchester like the gun)
Saturday afternoon I spent 2.5 hours at kung-fu, part of which was taken up by my level 2 test. I passed! I didn't do as awesome as I had hoped, but I passed, and am now officially Level 2. Yay!

Also, Michael Clayton was a freakin' awesome movie.

Today: dim sum and more kung-fu tonight.

Last night we went to my kung-fu school's Thanksgiving potluck, and it was tons of fun. Yay for socializing. Swung by Redbones to say a brief hello to the folks gathered there, and then made it home just in time for the best part of every Thursday night. That would be Supernatural. Which was super, super good last night.

So, the davis_square community has finally paid off from its huge, insane, annoyance by containing a post this morning about free cupcakes at Lyndell's on Dec. 3. Free delicious cupcakes!

Off to an all day cataloging conference in Worcester this morning. Woo.

Weekend!

Weekend wrap-up:

Friday: MeFi meetup at Watch City in Waltham. Good folks, tasty food, good times! I had onion rings. They made me go NOM NOM NOM.

Saturday: After getting up for an 8 AM dentist appointment (no waiting! clean teeth!), I ran around making food and cleaning the house for [livejournal.com profile] aquarianna6's baby shower. Cute baby clothes! Tasty food! Good company! It was very fun. I was exhausted after, but ran down to Central Square to meet up for some dinner at a Chinese place. Mmmmm.... scallion pancake.

Sunday: Book Club meeting, then a visit with the lady counterpart of [livejournal.com profile] thiswakingdream. Afterward Drew & I finished watching season 1 of 30 Rock. *love* that show. I am Liz Lemon, minus the comedic genius but also minus the dreadful love life. So basically, I love food and say/do embarrassing things a lot.

Monday: To celebrate the day off, I: did groceries, did laundry, spent money at Costco and Target, and continued The Quest for something to wear to this weekend's nuptials. I finally found a reasonably cute dress at H&M and an awesome pair of shoes at Macy's. So I will be outfitted in a somewhat classy manner. Despite being completely wiped out at the end of all this, I managed to pull it together to hit kung-fu last night, and endured the twice-weekly peril of pick a partner. Let me share with you the dread that fills my heart at the end of every kung-fu class. First, we are told to pick a partner for self-defense (sometimes with the qualification of "about your height" which for me is "no one"), which makes me feel like an awkward chubby kid in fifth grade waiting to be picked for kickball. Second, it involves strangers touching me and invading my personal space. *shudder* I have not yet gotten over this. I also don't like strange guys coming too close to the girls, if you know what I mean. It's awkward. Finally, it also involves being admonished for not looking my partner in the eye. I have a major problem with making eye contact while being aggressive, and this is most difficult for me. So sometimes I deal with it and sometimes I duck out of class a few minutes early to avoid dealing with it. To be fair, sometimes I also duck out of class early because self-defense often doesn't start until 8:55, at which point I just want to go home (class supposedly ends at 8:40, but never does).

That's my story.
wildflowersoul: (SPN- blah blah blah)
You know what feels kind of silly? Making more than one phone call to inquire about stores' stocks of fresh turkeys. I want fresh, not frozen! Un-brined so I can brine it myself! Wait- as I wrote this, I succeeded in finding one! Sweet. Poultry is good.

I am way more excited than I should be, as a sane person, for the season premiere of Supernatural tonight. Also- Gossip Girl mildly caught my interest last night, enough for me to keep it on probation for one more week, but it's still not nearly as charming as I'd hoped it would be. Dirty Sexy Money last night was not as entertaining as the pilot, but it was still much more awesome than I had anticipated this series would be. Also very excited for 30 Rock and the Office tonight! I watch too much tv!

In non-tv news, kung-fu continues to rock, as last night I attempted spinning reverse fan kicks.

87 degrees and 60% humidity is not an ideal condition for kung-fu outside. But on the plus side, it feels really good when you're done!

Picked up the new Rilo Kiley and new New Pornographers albums yesterday, and they are both so good! Especially the N.P., it's a perfect summer album. So good!!! And I get to see them both play in Boston in the next couple of months! Also, note to those in Boston, on Sept. 9 Neil Hamburger and Pleaseeasaur are making an appearance at the Middle East. I must attend!

Anyone up for doing anything tonight? Not like anyone checks the LJ on the weekends, so we'll probably call around later, but you know, I'm just covering my bases.
wildflowersoul: (SPN- blah blah blah)
Tonight's kung-fu class was awesomely hard. I have not exerted myself to the point of wanting to puke before tonight. Well, maybe back when I played field hockey, but that was a lifetime ago. Sunday night the German au pair in my [kung-fu] class and I went to see a band that a couple of guys in our class are in. It was what you'd expect from a band playing at All Asia, but it was fun and a very enjoyable time. I'm almost making friends in class! It's only taken a year!

Good god, the bunnies are going insane tonight. Beeferton kocked a baby gate over onto himself and it scared the ever living crap out of him. Now Robo is doing lord knows what, but there are suspicious sounds of a bunny getting into trouble in the other room.

I'm starting to get more psyched for my trip to DC for work/conference, as a plan is forming to meet up with some college friends and catch up. Hooray for having something to do after enduring a day of conferencing/working like crazy out of our DC office to catch up on the reference requests that are sure to build up. And hooray for seeing old friends!

Other news: Guitar Hero II rocks my socks, but I really suck at it.

Oh, and also: Book Club: put it on your radar for Saturday the 28th starting in the afternoon. Unless I hear objections from the peanut gallery. I'll send out an official notice soon. The book is World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.

So it turns out that when I took a preliminary stab at this year's taxes last month I must have futzed up the math, because I finally got 'em completed last night, and we're actually getting a bit of cash back from both the feds and the state. Even though I understand the idea that it's better to owe than to get a refund, since the government basically gets to earn interest off your money all year, I'd still rather get something back than owe.

Yesterday was another round of [livejournal.com profile] komos's excellent Iron Chef Challenge. I made up a batch of Caribbean pork chili that I hear came out tasty. I couldn't stand the sight of it after working on it for hours on Saturday, but I'm really glad it was well-received. For all that I was excited to fry up some plantains to go with it, the end result of said fried plantains was that it was too much effort for not enough taste.

Kung-fu tonight! I've been a bad girl and for all of Feb. I only made it once a week, so this week I need to step it up again.
wildflowersoul: (Princess Sparkle)
This weekend I... learned more mad numchucks skills... watched 9 hours of Supernatural with [livejournal.com profile] tenillypo... and got a wee bit Dunky McDrunk Drunk on what was not a lot of beer.

So, ok, I don't know why I even bother to balk and resist the fine television programming that Ms. [livejournal.com profile] tenillypo recommends to me, as it always turns out to be totally awesome (though I swear I am not going to turn on to Stargate Atlantis, I just can't go there). Supernatural is such a rockingly great show! Why did I resist for long?!
wildflowersoul: (Miguel point)
Good lord. First, the internet is full of crazy people. Srsly.

Second, I'm not sure that it's a auspicious start to the day to look in the work bathroom mirror and realize there is a sizable button gap through which one can clearly see boob. I will now walk around all day with my little black sweatshirt on over said gappy shirt. Stupid button down shirts! They always look so cute and professional on store mannequins, but they never quite look right once my rack is situated inside them.

Third, I totally rockzorred the kung-fu last night and learned the second half of Southern Fist 1 and the first half of Southern Fist 2. All in one night! This is quite an accomplishment, as it took almost a year for me to learn to the first half of Southern Fist 1. Learning! Progress! I'm totally pleased with this. I'll also be attending a kung-fu seminar on Saturday taught by my instructor's instructor. I'm expecting that to completely kick my ass.
wildflowersoul: (Jim & Pam laugh)
I love long weekends! So I passed my first-level kung-fu test on Saturday, and after a 2.5 hour workout, I'm surprised I was able to stay awake for as long as I did Saturday night. I'd like to thank my good friend Pabst Blue Ribbon for its assitance with that. Saturday was the always fun annual Yankee Swap. The rest of the weekend I spent my time lolling about reading, organizing Drew's Magic cards, and doing chores. I am a barrell of fun!
wildflowersoul: (Princess Sparkle)
I have a date set for my level one kung-fu test! It was almost going to be next Friday, but I still need some time to actually get my self-defense moves down somewhat better. So it'll be mid-January. Yay! Progress! I can't believe I haven't quit this activity yet!

Christmas comes a little early in our household, and the bunnies have already given us their gifts. Hee. We are such crazy pet people. Anyway, the bunners have excellent taste in gift-giving, and I now have a pair of awesome nunchucks, Journey's greatest hits, and an OC mix cd. Life is good.

I've been really enjoying the history channel lately. They had a neat program about the Little Ice Age recently that was fascinating. And tonight they had something about tea.

Now I need to try to wind down off the exercise endorphins... there's West Wing calling to me.
wildflowersoul: (Jim & Pam laugh)
I woke up this morning thinking it was Friday. I was mistaken. *sigh*

So, this weekend Drew & I watched "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," and it was immensely enjoyable. Fast-paced, bantery, and hilarious. Are there other movies out there that are similar in style? I have so many questions for you lately, my awesome friends-list!

Kung-fu tonight (Monday's class was all kicks, I'm hoping we go over some forms tonight). I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I've started dabbling in running/jogging on some non-kung-fu nights. It feels like it's getting a bit easier, or at least, yesterday I didn't feel like I was about to keel over at the end. I hate running so much, but I figure I need something aerobic to do a few times a week along with the yoga/pilates/weight training. You'd think I'd be in better shape than I am with all this working out. Someone needs to forcibly remove the peanut butter cups from our house! Save me from myself and my love of Reeses.
wildflowersoul: (Summer- Love)
I pushed myself so hard at kung-fu on Wednesday, and was so proud of myself for meeting the challenge. However, I think I pulled/strained something in the old back, because it's unbearably painful. And now I smell like old lady because I've slathered muscle rub on myself.

Can the day be over now?

I've been super bad about replying to comments lately, sorry 'bout that. I turned off comment emails when I went to Ireland and never turned them back on. I'll try to fix that today.

This weekend there will be merriment and the Borat movie, which excites me to no end.

And now... tv thoughts- OC spoilers )
wildflowersoul: (Veronica Shy)
Hee. Samuel L. Jackson just called me to tell me to go watch Snakes on a Plane. Tee-hee. I so will!

Anyway, so I totally kicked ass at kung-fu last night in a very satisfying way. I'm pretty proud of myself for sticking with it for 5 months now; I don't usually continue doing things that I'm not good at Right Away. Because I am spoiled and used to being good at the things I do very quickly. I'm kind of narcisstic, too It's actually kind of nice to have something to do where I'm not expected to be good at it, especially after a long day of work and having to be fast and correct and knowlegable about all kinds of stuff.

Oh, and there's a place in Brookline that supposedly has Boston's best cupcakes. This requires scientific investigation.

And finally- it's hot. I'm done with summer.
wildflowersoul: (Jump!)
Who has two thumbs and Mad Numchucks Skills?

This Girl!

So it's more like flailing numchucks around sort of correctly, but still, I got to play with weapons tonight in kung-fu. And that is sweet. I think I need [livejournal.com profile] komos to show me where I can buy some practice numchucks so I can hone said mad skills at home.

Today was a very good holiday for me. I made some fantastic challah bread, did some yoga, had a bunny-guinea pig date with Beef Wellington and [livejournal.com profile] tenillypo's Min, and watched a bunch of West Wing. Now I'm off to read a bit. Good times!
