I have a question for Boston-area folks- do any of you use a bank that's not Fleet/BoA or Citizens? I'm growing weary of Fleet's nickel and diming fees for everything, but don't know if the convenience of the ATMs is worth the fees here and there.

I expect that since you mentioned "not Citizens" you've had some sort of bad experience with them, or a good reason not to use them (I've had the same with Fleet and BoA), but I'm happy with my Green Checking over there. There are literally NO fees, and no minimum balance, and of course you can always find an ATM. I've heard good things about Wainwright, too, though...

Actually, I just assumed Citizens would be as bad as Fleet. No fees at all? I think I'll try switching to them first, as they have uber-convenient ATMs. Fleet is Teh Suck.

Definitely try out their Green Checking - I think the only stipulation is that you have to have direct deposit, but that's common enough nowadays that it's no big deal to set up even if you don't use it already. :)

Yeah, I went for Fleet when I first moved to Boston, and they refused to open an account for me based on the fact that my sister bounced a bunch of checks when she was 18, at a totally unrelated bank, and when she was a minor (but not after she turned 18), I was the adult associated with her account. So basically they refused me on the grounds that I had a sister that bounced checks. They are, indeed, Teh Suck.

Yeah, Citizens' Green Checking isn't bad at all, and even if you don't have direct deposit (which makes it free) the fees are relatively low (like 6 or 7 bucks a month).

Also, it's on the SUM network, so ATMs are plentiful.

I'm sold if it's on the SUM network. My work only pays through direct deposit, so that's set, too. I just wish I had known about all this, say, 3 years ago!

I have checking and savings acc't at a bank based in Texas. I get my paycheck deposited direct and any other deposits I send in via prepaid postage envelopes. Never had a problem. On the checking acc't I get up to $10 a month in ATM fees reimbursed, plus interest and cash back when I use my debit card as a credit card purchase (ie: sign instead of PIN).

I *heart* USAA.

That's pretty sweet. Cash back is a very, very good.

Wainwright. They're on the SUM network (which is why I'm still using them even though I've moved out of their area -- my closest ATM is on SUM), and they invest in lots of crunchy feel-good community programs. I have a "relationship package" which is free as long as I keep 5 grand in the various accounts (just savings and checking for me, but if you have a loan through them it counts towards that balance too). I'm pretty sure they offer some other free accounts that don't require as large a balance.

Eastern Bank is pretty good, and they are on SUM also. Banknorth is my bank, and I love them dearly (I used to work for them when they were MetroWest abnk), but I am not sure how many branches they have in metro Boston.

This has nothing to do with banks, and I'm sure you already know. But one of my friends reminded me today that Pixies tickets go on sale tomorrow (Saturday) so I thought I'd remind you.

Thanks!!!

I'm passing on the Lowell shows in the hopes that they come into the city (they have to, right? they wouldn't leave out their hometown...)
