So, do I trust the little old Italian woman down the street with altering my wedding dress, for the sake of easiness and less hassle, or should I truck my dress over to Brunhilda? Bridesmaids (and others), I need advice! The little old lady has probably been seamstressing for years, but then again, my luck with little old Italian folks as of late hasn't been too stellar.

Oooh, tough call. I went to Brunhilde because she was close to where I work. Close is good...but so is word of mouth. What do you know of the lady close to you?

I know nothing. I'm leaning toward at least bringing the dress in and seeing if she looks like she knows what she's doing. After all, how hard can a little hemming be, right?

Gloria's Wedding Dress Alteration Advice

Hi, Jen! My dress came from David's Bridal, but my sister-in-law took me to the little ol' lady who altered her dress. To be fair, all I needed to have done was a bustle, and it was the simplest thing -- 3 buttons, strategically placed and 3 loops on the train, strategically placed. It took all of 30 minutes to an hour. She did it WHILE I WAITED, and it cost me $15 or $25. :-) I think that a little ol' Italian lady with YEARS of seamstress work under her hands will be more than capable of handling your alterations. But ultimately, you need to go with your gut decision, in terms of whether or not you feel you can entrust your dress to her. (My guess is she'll probably cost less -- as David's Bridal charges an arm and a leg for alterations, and that makes for very disturbing wedding photos ... you know people always asking things like, "Hey, what happened to your arm?")

This sounds like a job for the Davis_Square community! Ask about the little old lady (or about alterations in general). I'm sure someone can tell you if she's any good!
