The new Sleater-Kinney record is so good! Drew picked it up for us last night. I like the Sonic Youth-esque jamminess, which is apropos because S-K and the Youth are the only bands that I've loved since high school who are still putting out great music. The abstractness of the lyrics will take a little getting used to, though, I'm not sure how I feel about "The Fox."

Ok, so a question for [livejournal.com profile] mrs_muffin and [livejournal.com profile] kayranord (and anyone else, too, but you two are the only people I know who had Maggies): I asked the seamstress who hemmed my dress to add whatever is needed to bustle the train up. I tried the dress on last night, and lo, it appears there's nothing for bustling. There is one loop on the inside of the train, but I think that's more for hanging up the train so it doesn't drag in the closet. So, um, what should I be looking for? When I call the seamstress to complain, I want to know what it is she was supposed to have done so I can explain better than saying "the hooky things for the bustle." As an aside: AARRRRRGGGH. I paid $155 and she didn't even do something I specifically asked her to, after taking at least a week longer to get it done than she originally promised? WTF, I am not some wide-eyed little girl wanting to be a pretty princess, I am an adult, and I want the damn job done right. *ahem* I'm glad I actually checked it out now, instead of waiting to bring it up to Maine.

Thanks for the Sleater-Kinney recommendation. I sort of thought that they had been sliding since 97 and hadn't bothered to really look at their new stuff. Their new album seems to get a lot of great reviews.

I love all of their albums. You would probably really like One Beat as well, I can burn you a copy sometime if you'd like.

Sure, we need to schedule a media exchange anyway ;-)

Gloria's Bustle

Hi, Jen!

My bustle was SUPER simple. I had three practically invisible (because they were made of white thread) loops on my train. One was in the middle, and then two on either side. There was a convenient flap of material (satin, lace, etc) that covered the transition from the bodice to the skirt on my dress (almost making it look like two pieces, but not quite), under which there were sewn three buttons - one in the middle and two on either side. After the wedding, I had people help me find the three loops, we clipped the two side loops to buttons up first, and the middle loop and button last, and VOILA! Super simple, yet nice-looking bustle. Honestly, I have NO idea what it looked like from behind, but I trusted the seamstress who did it WHILE I WAITED in the span of 30 minutes for $25 to not make me look like garbage. Plus, my sister-in-law-to-be was there and able to confirm that it looked fine. Simple - easy - cheap. I loved it!
I'm not sure what your dress looks like, so I'm not sure if you could use such a simple bustle. For some style of dresses, they create bustles that fasten UNDER the dress, to make the train almost disappear, as it tucks under, creating a fuller skirt, but a simple line at floor-length.

My bustle fastened under the dress. There were three ties that you tied together and the whole train went underneath. I'm not sure if she did yours that way or the other way. If the train pulls up and on top of the skirt, the buttons and loops can be really hard to find. She should have shown you where they were. I would call and ask her what type of bustle she did and where exactle she put the buttons/loops/ties as you can't find them. If you still can't find them, go see her and ask her to show you. Honestly, she really should have pointed them out because they can be almost invisible.

Thanks, chica, maybe they're there and just really hard to see, but Drew & I looked pretty closely.

well, if it makes you feel any better, my alterations were more than twice (ouch... a LOT more than twice) yours because I procrastinated too long.

That said... if you only see the one loop of ribbon under the train, then she probably did an over-bustle... in which case you'd need to find the threads/whatever on the top part of the train. I'd say call her. Unless it's just one attachment, there's probably an order as well. I concur with mrs.muffin that the seamstress really should have gone over it with you.

good luck!

I bought what I think was the first Sleater-Kinney album (Dig Me Out) several years back, but didn't really like it. I understand their newer stuff is a lot different. What album is a good jumping on point? Other than the new one, which I am planning on picking up.

They actually had 2 other albums before Dig Me Out. Hrm. Normally I would recommend DMO as a great starter album. You should check out Call the Doctor, which was the one before DMO, it's got more of a raw punky edge. You would probably like One Beat more than You're No Rock & Roll Fun, and I hear The Hot Rock is an acquired taste. Personally, I love 'em all so much I can't imagine them not rocking everyone's socks off.
