Local bakery update (not cupcakes!): When Pigs Fly officially makes the best bread ever. Picked up a loaf of sundried tomato bread to go with our lasagna last night, and it's ridiculously tasty.

In sad non-local news, I've been informed that Burgers & Cupcakes has closed shop in New York. But I need it to exist so that once a year we can have one perfect day in New York. That perfect day involves: a heck of a lot of walking, reading books at Vol de Nuit with begian beers and french fries, and then dinner at Burgers & Cupcakes. I am a simple woman with simple needs, and a restaurant that serves only burgers and cupcakes is one of those needs.

Also, I've decided that I seriously need to read more books. Next year will be a year for reading books! I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale right now, which is entertaining enough. But it has reminded me that I never read Jane Eyre, and I think that needs to be rectified. There are a bunch of other "classic" type books that I need to actually read, too. I'm not sure if that will involve Ulysses or not.

That is excellent! I live so close to that bakery and am often grumbling about how I don't want to go to Shaws for a stupid loaf of bread and I'll be damned if I'll eat Wonder on my 21st-century grown-up salary.

I'm not an enourmous fan of that genre, but Jane Eyre is very very good, as is Persuasion. Don't bother with Mansfield Park.
I've attempted Ulysses for that reason, butuh.... didn't get very far.

The bread is so delicious. Expensive, but worth the money, I think. Plus, they have a bunch of different breads available for tasting when you go in.

I... don't think I care overly much for Jane Austen. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, since it seems like everyone loooooves Austen, but give me a Bronte any day of the week. I imagine my foray into Ulysses will involve one afternoon and then an "eff this!" as I toss the book aside. Thank goodness for library cards, at least I can try it without buying it.

Oh I definitely understand, no need to be embarassed. I have some problems with Austen too. My feeling about her is like I've started saying, "well, this book is good for what it is" about a lot of things. I can recommend other "classic" type books, which I can lend you and may actually be enjoyable.

That's exactly what I did with Ulysses ;)

It looks to be true, though I can't tell from googling if there's still a location that's open on 9th Ave. *sniff* It was the best restaurant ever.

Ooh, I'll be curious to hear what you think about Jane Eyre. You know I share your Bronte love, but I really didn't care for that one.

Hmm. I will do a book report upon completion! I recall trying to read it in middle school or junior high and finding it too boring to bother with, but maybe I wasn't mature enough to appreciate it.
