Wow, This discussion on Mefi about Askers vs. Guessers is so interesting. I am a die hard Guesser and Askers just asking for things without having sussed out what the likely outcome of their question baffles me. This probably explains why I am also an over-offer-er; I'd be so uncomfortable asking for x,y, or z that I can't imagine anyone else being comfortable asking. Anyway, interesting reading.

Also, check this out for hilarity. #1 is exactly why I hate holding other people's babies! And the grocery store purchases one just made me so laugh so hard I think I pulled an ab muscle.

*points* This explains so much!

I'm from a family of Guess Culture people who are nevertheless not very good at guessing. So we're passive aggressive if we need something done, put out by askers and I for one always say yes. Also I'm an over-offerer.

I had an experience where I was the woman that was the subject of that post. I thought I was asking someone who was a friend (granted, a friend from recent years, not childhood) for a place to stay when I came to visit, but their response was clearly a reluctant yes. It made me feel very uncomfortable, and I tried to back out of it. I learned the hard way that I have to guess other people's responses, and therefore, we won't be asking anyone for a place to stay again when we're visiting their town. I wasn't trying to be rude, and a straight "no" would have been no problem, but the fake generosity was painful. Lesson learned.

In slightly related news, I just logged in to my metafilter account and it says "22515 links and 1159366 comments posted since your last visit"! I think I need to peruse the website more often!!

And, the hyperbole and a half post was fantastic. I cried I laughed so hard.
