I recently made the mistake of reading some particularly unfortunate books by Meg Cabot. Leaving aside my feminist problems with a character whose defining personality trait is her obsession with the averageness of the size of her pants, these things just were not well written.

Since I've been filling my brain with absolute garbage this year, I think it may be time for me to embark on a reading program. That list is bad ass. I am entertaining the idea of attempting to start a meetup.com book club group as motivation to actually attempt this list. Though being in charge of something like that would make me feel like I should have more of a clue about literature and stuff.

I just discovered this fantastic writer, his name is Kobo Abe, Japanese writer. 1924-1993.

Im reading one of his books called "The Box Man" and its really good. Its about a man who decides to leave his normal life and live in a large cardboard box on the streets of Tokyo....thats all ill say because i dont want to give too much away...written in 1973. he wrote about 7 other novels as well that are all supposed to be great.

another Japanese writer who is great, Haruki Murakami, ive read one of his books "A Wild Sheep Chase" and i thought it was excellent...the one i want to read is called "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" is supposed to be his best....he's considered one of the best writers of today...

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is fantastic, nice and sprawling and very strange.... though I think I loved "Sputnik Sweetheart" more...

That is an...intimidating list. I think I'll stick to my Robert Jordan, Georgette Heyer and YA Urban Fantasy for the moment. Although if you started a club, I might be willing to read some of those...Hmmm....

So I was scanning the list and saw:

Eugene O'Neill, 1888-1953. Mourning Becomes Electra; The Iceman Cometh; Long Day's Journey into Night.

The Iceman Cometh made me immediately think of The Nightman Cometh. Which got me to thinking that maybe Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia actually got its ideas from great literature and in fact wikipedia provide that my hunch was correct > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Iceman_Cometh (see down the bottom) > Hah! Broke down low brow drunks are iconic and classical.

Maybe instead of reading that list of books, you should just read all the wikipedia reviews of the books on that list : )
