We must get these baby lit books, stat!

As for what I'm reading, I just finished 50 Shades of Grey. If you know what it is, I can assure it is exactly as hilarible as you think it would be. If you don't know, wait until you are not at work to google it. And now I'm cleansing my mind palate with an actually well-written, gripping, young adult dystopian future book called All These Things I've Done. Yes, the Killers reference is what sold me on it. That, and it has an awesome cover. I really would love to have time in my life to start writing again.

West is all "myself, myself, I do it self" now. It's pretty cute. I thought we'd turned a corner on the sleeping stuff, we have some good weeks now, but the past couple of nights have been not-great. I think he's pretty much night-weaned, at least. I give in sometimes if he calls for a milk break after 4 am because I hope against hope that it will make him sleep a bit longer (not sure that hypothesis is proving true or not).

That second one is definitely going on my to-read list. I think I'll live vicariously through your reviews of the first one, though. :)

Sweet, I will keep you posted on how the second one goes.

Heh. Live vicariously away! There are two more books in the series, so I will keep you updated on how stupid they are.

I totally stole that word from Metafilter. Possibly from the Metafilter comments about the book. It fits so well!

Disclaimer: my favorite book as a child (3-6?) was the Ladybird abridged version of The Lost World. So, y'know, take it with a grain of salt and call me a hypocrite :)

I really don't think that those Baby Lit books are necessarily a good idea for children. They're great books, told with beautiful (and sophisticated) prose, that I hope West will enjoy the hell out of when he's in High School or older.

But just because they're good stories, that doesn't mean they make good picture books. They may be, I haven't seen inside - but I worry that it does no justice to the rich cast of P&P to tell it in this format, or that the plot of Jane Eyre is really one for kids.

There are thousands and thousands of really high quality children's literature available that was written for (or just happens to be great for) toddlers. Honestly, this looks like a marketing ploy for parents rather than books to kids.

And um. I'm worried I sound like a preachy busybody. Sorry! I've just been immersed in children's lit this semester! I would love to talk about kids books.

No worries! I totally see your point- no fear, they are not actually trying to tell the actual stories to babies. The Alice in Wonderland is a colors primer, and the other three are numbers primers. Making them completely adorable and not watering down the classics!

I love, love, children's books now. There are so many good ones, my Amazon wishlist for books for West is ridiculously long.

Ha, I had no idea that's what they really are. Oh well! I did look, I must have missed it. >_>

I'm getting really discerning now with kids books, but that's not a bad thing at all, because I can see a bad book and I know how many good ones there are. It's awesome!

YES! Well, a qualified yes. How much fanfic have you read on the old interwebs? It is pretty rife with some obvious fanfic-y writing style annoyances. But it is pretty awesome, for what it is. Also, the writer is British and really didn't do her homework that well for translating some British-isms into Americanisms, given that it's supposed to take place in Washington. How much tea does one college student drink??!
